Selling the car

March 28th, 2011 at 02:38 am

We are selling one of our cars on Craigslist and is just wondering if anyone has experience with this? We are selling our 2001 Grand Prix for $3000, and we have asked for cash only, because we have been burned before with checks. I'm wondering if we need to worry about counterfeit money? Or am I just being a big worrywart? We have someone coming to look at the car tomorrow.

I actually posted a car on Craiglist and have had a positive experience. I also posted a trailer for my BF and had a positive experience, it sold with in days. Good luck

I've sold a car for cash - no problem. I think the price was $3k, now that I think about it!

I think it is always good to be cautious. Try to find out as much as possible about the people who are buying the car, etc. Maybe note their license plate, etc. I think it would be rare for people to use counterfeit money, but who knows. I'd be more nervous about being a buyer and getting robbed, myself. Those stories are pretty common. I haven't heard any counterfeit cash stories - not that it doesn't happen.

You can purchase those counterfeit pins at staples for little of nothing

Couldn't you ask for a certified check?

I would accept cash as long as the exchange happened right outside my bank where I could verify the case was legit and deposit it right away.

We sold our car and a trailer on Craigslist with no trouble at all, but we were pretty careful about it. There is no insurance against counterfeit bills, I suppose, but I haven't heard of that particular problem happening. Still, I agree with the above -- make the transaction at the bank parking lot if you are unsure and it will lead to some peace of mind, at least. Plus it is a safer, public location.
